The Association of Great Britain First Day Cover Collectors (GBFDC) was formed in 1994 to enable people who collect British first day covers to contact each other and learn more about the hobby. Since then GBFDC has grown steadily and now has over 250 members. Most members are in the UK, but an important number of members are overseas.
The main activities of the Association are:
1. Producing our own limited edition Official British first day covers , available exclusively to members at issue;
2. Publishing a bi-monthly newsletter, “First Day Coverage”, sent free to members;
3. Holding British first day cover postal / online auctions, open to members and non-members.
4. Organising informal regional pub meetings and an Annual General Meeting with an associated British first day cover fair.
As you can see this is quite an undertaking but we do it because there is a huge demand for information about GB First Day Covers and a need for members to be kept up to date with the latest developments in the field. Our regular newsletter is an ideal vehicle for getting your point across or just learning about what other members collect and what they have for sale. We welcome submissions for the next edition of the newsletter, so whatever your viewpoint on GB First Day Covers and Royal Mail then feel free to let us know – you may find you are not in a minority!
First Day Cover Fair
GBFDC hold the only First Day Cover fair in the UK which is dedicated solely to collectors of First Day Covers. Held annually at the same venue as the AGM, the fair is an opportunity for collectors to come together and meet other members of the Society, swap covers, information and exchange views on a wide range of philatelic matters.
The fair generally features stands by some of the country’s leading FDC dealers who between them hold extensive stocks of the majority of GB First Day Covers. If you are looking for a particular FDC, or need help and advice on what to collect then this is the fair for you!
This year we had 8 dealers stands at the fair and they gave advice on collecting GB First Day Covers, Thematic covers, Official and non Official covers, handstamps and meter marks and a range of other subjects. If you’ve ever wanted to know about First Day Covers, or some guidance on what to collect then you should attend the fair. The next one will be held on Sunday 7th October 2012 at the Collingwood Centre, Great Barr, Birmingham and the GBFDC AGM will be held on the same day. All are welcome so come along and meet the other members!
Who Are we?
The simple answer is that we are just ordinary people who happen to enjoy collecting First Day Covers. Some of our members are Stamp and Cover dealers and some are members of the Philatelic Traders Association, but the majority of members and officers are just people with a passion for the hobby. You can contact us at any time about the society or First Day Covers and we’ll always do our best to help.
The Officers of the Association are:
Richard Park – Hon. Chairman and Auctioneer
Terry Barnett – Hon. Acting Secretary and AGM Organiser
Phil Sheridan – Hon. Editor “First Day Coverage”
David Cohen – Hon. Treasurer
Dr. John Chidgey – Hon. Publicity Officer
